What is a Presbyterian?
Historically speaking, Presbyterians came out of the so-called Protestant Reformation, and we trace our roots to the Church of Scotland.
Presbyterians are named by the particular way we govern ourselves. In Greek, the word Presbyteros means “Elder,” and our churches are governed by a body of Ruling Elders, called the Session.
Similarly to the US Congress, these Elders are democratically elected by our church members, to govern the local church for a specific period.
What do Presbyterians believe about the Bible?
We Presbyterians take the Bible seriously; it is our faith’s defining document.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice, and the source of those truths by which all people live.
We also believe in the “inspiration” of the Scriptures, meaning, that God spoke to and through people whose minds and hearts God had touched.
What should I expect while attending worship?
A regular worship service includes music and prayers (silent and spoken). Also, the reading of scriptures, greeting one another (called the “passing or exchange of the peace”), a sermon, an offering, many prayer moments, and a closing blessing.
Music is also important in our worship service. We tend to prefer the old, familiar songs, but we also sing contemporary praise and worship music from the 21st century. Occasionally, worship includes music provided by an individual musician or vocalist, or a group. On the first Sunday of the month, our worship includes the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper (which other churches sometimes call Eucharist or Holy Communion).
I am a Christian, but I am not a Presbyterian. May I participate in the Lord’s Supper?
Yes, here at First Pres Port Charlotte, we believe “The Lord’s Table,” is not any one church’s table. For us, the Lord’s table is open to anyone who professes their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and has a repentant heart.
We believe this meal is provided, not because we have earned the right to eat and drink with Jesus, but simply as an act of divine love, so all are welcome, including children.
Do you have a dress code?
No, we do not. Wear what makes you comfortable. Some men wear jackets and ties, while others wear polos, sports shirts and it is not uncommon here in Florida, Hawaiian shirts, and even shorts. Some women wear slacks, and others wear dresses. For us, what matters is not what you wear, but that you are here worshiping with us.
Where are you located?
We are located at 2230 Hariet Street, next to Rock Calvary Chapel Church (since we share the same campus they do). The Presbyterian church is the smaller sanctuary on the corner of Gandy Ave and Hariet Street. We encourage people to arrive early for continental breakfast, since this way it will be easier to find a parking spot.
